But in doing so it also rewards in a manner an arcade-inspired biking title cannot hope to equal. On the higher handling settings SBK 2011 will happily show you the consequences of taking a racing motorcycle beyond its abilities. Open the throttle too early in the exit phase of a turn and you'll be getting all-too intimate with the tarmac. Brake deep into a corner here and you'll never see the apex, you'll be ploughing straight into the gravel trap instead. This makes simulation-inspired games like SBK 2011 a frustrating proposition for many players. On a bike all of your braking is done prior to entering the corner and once you turn-in, you're committed to that line. Where on four wheels you can 'trail brake' (progressively come off the anchors) towards the apex of a bend or even adjust your trajectory mid-corner if things aren't looking promising, adopting a similar approach once you halve the number of tyres is disastrous. It may sound obvious but riding a bike isn't like driving a car. SBK's ride is great - if you can stay on. Brave it up to medium or full and you unlock that potential, with the bike reacting in a delightfully convincing manner.
Even on the easiest setting, which will only please the most casual of digital bikers as the riding aids that come as part of the package tend to be intrusive, you get a sense of the real-world dynamics at work here. Do so and regardless of the riding simulation level you selected – low, medium or full – you'll be left in no doubt as to how solid the model powering SBK 2011's handling is.
So if you check out the obligatory Quick Race, Time Attack or Race Weekend options, for instance, you can don the lid of your favourite rider (as well as the odd all-time legend – with more unlocking as you play through the game) and hit the official track of your choice. No-one's leathers are likely to suffer a shock-induced unstitch at the confirmation that as the official title of the Superbike World Championship, developer Milestone's latest effort comes with all of the real bikes, real tracks and real riders in tow. But in case gamers needed to be reminded of this, SBK 2011 has ridden into view.
